An economy undergoing permanent expansion
In recent years, Northeast Brazil has gone from being a producer of traditional goods to a manufacturer of technology-based products, such as special steels, automobiles, equipment for irrigation, software and petrochemical products.
Of the investments made in strengthening of activities such as those involving grains and fruit, a modern agro-industry has developed, gaining new markets and taking northeastern products to the tables of Americans, Europeans and Asians. Soy, fine grapes, mango, melon, Caribbean cherry and other tropical fruit produced in the Region have won over the palate of the international market.
The reflections of this permanently expanding economy are still to be seen mostly in the large cities of the Northeast – some with a population over 2.5 million inhabitants.
The Northeast of Brazil is growing in all sectors and in all directions and offers the best conditions for those who also wish to grow.
Privileged Location
The proximity of the European and American markets, together with a modern port infrastructure, represent an enormous competitive advantage for those who wish to invest in the Region and help to consolidate Northeastern products in the four corners of the world.
Ideal environment for investment
In addition to infrastructure, the Northeast has programs to support productive activities, fiscal incentives and labor with a high capacity to absorb training. Credit lines and technical and market information about the Region guarantee entrepreneurs what is most important: knowledge of where to invest. For enterprises located in the semi-arid, there are special incentives.

Agribusiness: the Northeast improves with every harvest producing fruits and grains for the world
UN studies show that Brazilian agricultural production may overtake that of the United States over the next 12 years. The Northeastern states are a part of this growth. Soy, grapes, mango, melon, papaya and other fruits are cultivated in the Northeast with high productivity and exported to several countries.
High productivity
With fertile soils, sun all year round and the technical and financial support of Banco do Nordeste, Northeastern producers reap good results in agribusiness. A good example may be found in flower production: every 42 days, 200 roses per square meter are harvested, more than twice the productivity of Colombia, leader in flower-production in Latin America.
Grains – 10 million hectares of farmland
The Brazilian Northeast is becoming one of the most promising farmable areas of the Country in view of the large expanse of land occupied by as yet unused grasslands. The grasslands of the Region, especially in the states of Maranhão, Piauí and Bahia, occupy around 10 million hectares of potentially arable land for rice, maize, soy and other grains, and enable use of mechanized, high-tech agriculture.
Favorable climate guarantees productivity
In addition to the ease of mechanization, favorable climatic conditions guarantee high productivity with use of state-of-the-art technology, as is the case with coffee plantations in western Bahia, reaching 5 tons per hectare compared with 1.1 tons, the Brazilian average. In the case of soy, some areas of the northeastern grasslands exceed the national average of 2.5 tons per hectare.
Tourism: on the trail of large investments
The Northeast of Brazil has become the destination of millions of tourists and of large international investments. The most important hotel and resort chains in the world have discovered this Region, attracted by the beauty of its landscape, by its 3,300 km of beaches – the largest coastline in Brazil – and also by infrastructure financed by - Program for Development of Tourism in the Northeast.
