Fish Farming
Exceptional climate conditions
The Region presents high and uniform temperatures all year round, what makes the farming of any tropical specie possible, with high levels of productivity.
Farming in net - tanks
The farming of tilapias: in net –tanks is an economical alternative in the Region due to the dams and reservoirs, fed by the waters of the São Francisco and Parnaíba rivers. In Brazil, the production of tilapias, incipient until the early 90’s, is nowadays about 40 to 50 thousand tons/year.
According to CODEVASF - Companhia de Desenvolvimento dos Vales do São Francisco e Pamaíba (São Francisco and Parnaíba Valleys Development Company), which has as an aim the use of only 10% of the big reservoirs of its working area, productivity will reach 108,610 tons/year.
Success at Americans’ and Europeans’ tables
Cultivated and consumed mainly in Africa and Asia, tilapia has reached, in the past years, international acceptance. It is estimated that its consumption will increase in great parts of Europe, as a substitute of several species of white meat. Nowadays, the United States are the big market, having imported 90 thousand tons in 2003.
